5. Averatec

  • Remember Averatec's sweet AHI UMPC concept from a couple months back? Well, they gave us the latest iteration of the device as it's been moving forward, as well as some details -- and we have to say, this is the first UMPC we've genuinely been able to get excited about. The sub 2-pounder will supposedly be somehow optimized for VoIP, videoconferencing, viewing live TV and VOD, and apparently even gaming (we're hoping they mean light gaming -- no CrossFire going on up in here). It's also supposed to have voice recognition systems (presumably for use with GPS guidance and the like), a docking station, and is set to be priced under $800 for Q4 2006 launch. So basically it sounds like they're making a bunch of stuff up to get us excited, because we're having a hard time believing they're going to meet these goals. Then again, with capabilities so tantalizing and a price that low, we're a little tempted to turn a blind eye and hope for the best.

9. The Next iPhone G

  • Imagined by Samuel Lee Kwon, the iPhone Next G concept breaks
the stereotype notion of handset. This futuristic concept is meant to
be strapped on to the wrist and project a display on the user’s palm.
Images affirm it as a touchscreen concept with camera and soft pad
with pulse censor. Concept has single button to receive and disconnect
calls, separate emails button for the easy internet access. The designer
has taken care of the music thugs with iPod function button on it.
While side toward the palm, it has projector lens, music volume control
button and sleep and wake button and on the other side, concept has
speaker microphone option and 3o pin dock connector. Whereas its
back side consists pulse sensor and SIM card tray.

10. iCloud

  • Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple introduced the new, free service,
iCloud, which would replace the personal computer as the
central hub of people’s digital lives — storing photos, music
and documents. Relying on the PC, he said, no longer works
now that millions of people have multiple devices, each with
photos, documents, songs, phone applications and other files.
The biggest player in digital music has finally vaporized its
content. Starting this fall, you'll be able to stream your digital
music library over the Internet, rather than having to download
it to your devices and store it on them. We've already seen
Amazon and Google's attempts at a Web-based streaming
music service, with the former's Cloud Player and the latter's
Google Music Beta, but with iTunes' dominance in digital music
, Apple's iCloud could eclipse both of them. Apple's offering
differs from those of Amazon and Google in some big ways,
though. Here's a rundown of the three services' differences
    and similarities.
